the Local Plan

Plana Ionadail

The Local Plan for the Kilmallie area is contained within the West Highland and Islands Local Plan.   This is what used to be called the Lochaber Local Plan.

The current plan

The current West Highland & Islands Local Plan was adopted on 7 September 2010.   Regrettably there was no Kilmallie Community Council in place at that time, so we were unable to gauge our community’s views on the Plan, or to influence the content of the Plan.

The Plan’s objectives

The current plan includes a number of strategic objectives for the development of the Fort William area.   One objective with particular implications for our area aspires “to promote large-scale after-use for the vacated mill site taking advantage of its unique location and accessibility to road, rail and sea”.

Local site allocations within the Plan

The current plan allocates the following sites in or adjacent to our area –

  • a 44.8ha site at Corpach as acceptable for 200 houses, together with associated community, retail and business use;
  • a 2.1ha site at Corpach Locks as acceptable for tourism and recreational use with ancillary business or residential use;
  • a 1.3ha site at Banavie Car Park as acceptable for tourism and/or recreation related to the canal;
  • a 47.4ha site at Blar Mor as acceptable for 300 houses, business, leisure and urban district scale retail;
  • a 45ha site at Corpach Paper Mill for business and industrial use;
  • a 6.5ha site at Annat North for business and industrial use;
  • a 23.9ha site at Caol/Lochyside as acceptable for 350 houses, other residential use, and compatible community facilities including a possible primary school;
  • a 9.8ha expansion site at Blar Mor Industrial Estate for business and industrial use;

The current plan safeguards –

  • a 1.4ha site at Kilmallie Hall for community use.

Do you agree with the Local Plan?

Please let us know if you agree or disagree with any aspect of the Local Plan, or if you become aware of any current proposals that would jeopardise the achievement of the Plan’s objectives in our area.

Have your say!

If you have strong views either way, please get in touch and let us know how you feel.   Everyone in our community is entitled to a voice about what happens here.   If we know what the community’s views are, we can try to represent them to The Highland Council.
