Kilmallie Community Company
About Corpach Woods and Kilmallie Community Company
The Kilmallie Community Company is a completely separate organisation from Kilmallie Community Council.
When the paper mill closed the owners Arjo Wiggins gave two small woods to the community – the oak wood Cnoc nam Faobh next to Druim Fada estate and the pine wood Tom Giubhais above Guisach Terrace. In order to take legal ownership Kilmallie Community Company was formed. Grants from the Community Land Unit and from the Big Lottery Fund were obtained mainly to pay the substantial legal fees. Since 2006 the company has owned and managed the woods. Anyone can be a member to support the company or to help with work parties.
There is a board of 6 to 9 directors (see below). Minutes of meetings will be posted on this web site. Work parties have been organised to tidy up rubbish and to clear up after gale damage. Enthusiasts have listed the species of plants to be found and nest boxes have been put up.
We intend to keep the woods much as they are. As well as the big trees there are a lot of holly seedlings. As these grow up they will change the character of the woods unless we do something – but what is the big question.
